Make your own LEGO Minifig Storage Shelf
Did you know that the Upstart Magazine head office has a LEGO mini figurine collection that now has over 1,200 minifigs?
This meant that we created a super-sized LEGO minifig storage shelf to house and display our collection. You’ve probably seen it in the background of some of our toy unboxing videos!
After receiving lots of feedback from readers who would like to create their own LEGO mini figurine storage shelves we created this “how to” video.
Follow the instructions with your caregiver to build your own quick, easy and cheap storage shelf (for smaller collections).
What you'll need:
an old picture frame with a recessed back
2m 2-stud Mayka Toy Block Tape (any colour)
paint (we used white) and brushes
timber screws
wood offcuts
pencil and ruler
measuring tape
What to do:
Open the back of your picture frame. Remove the glass panel (you do not need it for this Get Creative project) and recycle it.
Remove the back panel and paint the side that doesn’t have any hooks on it. Choose whatever colour you prefer.
We chose white to help the LEGO mini figurines stand out.Once dry, turn the back panel over and mark where you will attach the shelves that the minifigs will sit on.
The average LEGO minifig (not including tall hats/accessories) is 4cm tall, so you need to allow at least a 4.5cm gap between shelves, as well as the height of the wood you use for the shelves.
Our wood was 1cm thick, so we left a 6cm gap - allowing room for a few special/tall minifigs.Measure the width of your frame, from one inside edge to the other.
Ask a caregiver to help you to cut your shelf timber to the same width as the inside of your frame.
Paint your shelf timber and allow to dry completely.
Once dry, attach ZURU Mayka Tape to the top of each timber shelf, this is what will keep your minifigs on the shelf.
Screw each length of shelf timber to the backing board of your picture frame.
Re-attach the backing board to your picture frame.
Ask a caregiver to help you securely hang your frame on a well and add your favourite LEGO minifigs to your new shelves.
