How to Make a Felt Story Box
Bring your stories to life with a simple, homemade felt story box.
Dress up felt characters, create settings for stories and keep them all stored in their own box or tin.
What you need:
An old tin or box with a lid (any shape or size you prefer)
Sheets of coloured felt
Hot glue gun
White pencil and black pen or pencil
Vivid marker
Scissors
How to create the background lid:
Clean and dry the tin.
Using the lid as a stencil, draw around it onto the felt and cut out the shape
Stick your felt shape to the underside of the tin’s lid with hot glue. You only need a small amount of glue in each corner
Tip: You can also make a selection of different coloured backgrounds; these can be kept inside the tin with all your other cut outs.
How to make a felt character:
Draw the outline of your lid onto the felt and, inside this, draw the outline of your character.
Your outline should be slightly fatter than you want the final character to be, this will give you space to cut out just inside the lines.Cut out your felt character.
Draw a mouth and eyes onto your character with a vivid marker.
How to make felt clothes and accessories
To make clothes, hair, shoes and accessories for your character, lay the character onto the felt and mark where the edges of the item will reach to with a pen or pencil.
Using your marks as a guide draw the outline of your item, slightly fatter than you want it, and cut it out just inside the lines you’ve drawn.
You can add decorations to the accessories like sequins, glitter or buttons.
We created two different little felt symbols so that the red top could be a Forest Football shirt or a Christmas jumper.
