Homemade Mince and Cheese Pies Recipe

Whether you’re on the hunt for comfort food or a recipe that will use up leftovers, try these simple homemade mince and cheese pies. They’re packed with your favourite vegetables and you don’t need a pie maker to create them!

What you need:

  • 400g mince

  • An egg

  • 5x flaky puff pastry sheets

  • ½ cup grated cheese

  • 1 can of your favourite pasta sauce

  • An assortment of vegetables
We used 2 carrots and 1/2 cup of frozen peas in ours, but celery, courgette and corn are other ideas.

  • A Texas Muffin tin

  • A large round cookie cutter
OR get creative and use the lid from a small round takeaway container!

  • Food-safe brush

REMEMBER: always ask permission from a grown-up before using an oven, or getting to work in the kitchen

What to do:

  1. Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius.

  2. Add a little oil to a frying pan and cook the mince over medium heat until browned,

  3. While the mine is browning, peel and finely grate a carrot (and any other vegetables you’d like to add).

  4. Once the mince is browned, add the grated carrot and any other vegetables to the pan and cook over medium heat for 2-3 minutes.

  5. Stir through the pasta sauce and simmer on low heat for 10 minutes.

  6. While the meat sauce is simmering, cut the Flaky Puff Pastry sheets into circles using your cutter.

  7. Grease the Texas Muffin tin and line each hole with a circle of pastry.
Pro tip: make a small cut at four even points around the edges of your pastry circles to help them fit into the muffin tin holes.

  8. Once cooked, spoon the meat sauce into each lined muffin tin hole until two thirds full.

  9. Sprinkle grated cheese on top of the meat sauce.

  10. Add another circle of pastry to the top of each pie and pinch at the edges to seal.

  11. Use a fork to poke holes in the top sheet of pastry.

  12. Beat an egg in a small bowl and brush it onto the top of each pie with a food-safe brush.

  13. Bake for 20 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and flaky.

  14. Serve immediately with more vegetables or salad
OR transfer to a cooling rack and (once cooled) freeze for fast future meals.
